U.S. legal services for international clients

A U.S. law firm for clients anywhere in the world.

MC Law works with companies, founders, and individuals outside the United States on U.S. legal matters: U.S. trademark filings, contracts with U.S. parties, forming a U.S. company, enforcing intellectual property in the United States, and disputes in U.S. courts and arbitration. The work is handled remotely, at a flat fee in U.S. dollars wherever the matter can be scoped up front.

We advise on U.S. law. For the law of another country, we work alongside your local counsel.

Why clients abroad come to us

When you need a U.S. lawyer.

You are filing a U.S. trademark

If your domicile is outside the United States, the USPTO requires a U.S.-licensed attorney to represent you on a trademark application, a registration, or a TTAB proceeding (37 C.F.R. § 2.11). You can base the application on your registration or application at home.

A U.S. customer or distributor wants a contract

U.S. buyers, resellers, and platforms often expect paper under a U.S. state's law. We draft it, or review what they sent you, and explain what each clause does in plain English.

You are forming a U.S. company

You do not need to be a U.S. citizen or resident to own a U.S. LLC or corporation. We prepare the formation documents and the agreements among the owners. Tax treatment depends on your home country too, so we coordinate with your tax adviser.

Someone is copying your work in the United States

A DMCA takedown notice or a demand letter is often the fastest first step. Works first published abroad generally do not need U.S. registration before a copyright suit, since 17 U.S.C. § 411(a) covers "United States works", but statutory damages and attorney's fees depend on timely registration under § 412.

You have a dispute in the United States

We litigate patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, and commercial disputes in federal and state court and in arbitration, and we can prepare a single filing at a flat fee or run the whole matter on a phased budget.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. We work remotely with companies, founders, and individuals abroad on U.S. legal matters, including U.S. trademarks, contracts with U.S. parties, U.S. company formation, IP enforcement in the United States, and U.S. disputes. Ordering works the same way from any country.

Yes. Since August 2019, an applicant, registrant, or party whose domicile is outside the United States must be represented before the USPTO in trademark matters by an attorney licensed in the United States (37 C.F.R. § 2.11). The same applies to responding to an Office Action and to keeping a registration alive.

U.S. law: federal law and the law of the states where we can properly advise. We do not advise on the law of other countries. When a matter also turns on your home country's law, we work alongside your local counsel.

Generally yes. U.S. states do not require the owners of an LLC or a corporation to be U.S. citizens or residents. Owning a U.S. company does not by itself give you the right to live or work in the United States, and tax treatment depends on your home country as well, so plan for those separately.

U.S. dollars. The flat fee on each service page is the fee in your engagement letter. Government filing fees and other third-party costs are passed through at cost.

No. MC Law does not prepare or prosecute patent applications. We counsel on patents, including freedom-to-operate and validity opinions, handle patent licenses and assignments, and litigate patent disputes.

Not for the flat-fee services, which run entirely online and by email. A contested matter may eventually call for testimony or an appearance, and we will tell you early if that is likely.
